We’re a Florida Family Now

Good morning, beach volleyball fans,

We’re back with our regularly scheduled programming here on Mondays with Beach Volleyball Digest. I’ve intended to write a Digest but moving across the country and living out of boxes and dodging two hurricanes and meeting 28 girls and a number of staff and trying not to get lost on a college campus every day has required my utmost attention, and still does.

Alas, I only made one wrong turn on campus at FSU last week, which we’ll call a win.

Also a win: This week’s podcast with Troy Field, in which he delivered nearly two hours of pure comedic, and oftentimes deeply thoughtful, gold.

The week in SANDCAST Studios

This week’s podcast featured Troy Field, long one of the most entertaining players on the AVP Tour and one of the more likable individuals you’ll meet in real life, or IRL, as the kids say. This is two hours of awesomeness, talking the wonders of Tim Bomgren, American Icon, why Taylor Crabb is the People’s Champ, Troy’s efforts at growing the game while growing his own game, and Olympic aspirations. It’s phenomenal. Enjoy:

AVP League Midseason report

The AVP League has reached its midseason, and I remain intensely curious what y’all think of the new endeavor. Here are the standings led, of course, by the New York Nitro’s Taylor Crabb and Taylor Sander, and Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes. Part of me wonders if the AVP intentionally put together a superteam to serve as the de facto Kansas City Chiefs/New York Yankees/previous Golden State Warriors, etc. because any match becomes imminently watchable, in that a loss is a huge storyline. Or they just messed up however they selected teams. I’m kind of leaning towards the former. In any event, Larry Hamel over at VBMag has been providing comprehensive coverage, and if you’ve missed any of his write-ups, here are a few:

FUN NEWS! SANDCAST and Volleyball TV are partnering up. By the end of the year, the Road to Paris will feature highlights and clips from Volleyball TV to complement the coverage. Better yet: You can get 20 percent off your VBTV subscription if you use the code SANDCAST20.

News Around the Beach

  • International volleyball is back! Two Elite16s and the Beach Pro Tour Finals remain. This week, we’re headed to Joao Pessoa, where Kyle Friend and I will be on the mic and Frito will be delivering his typically slick content. Here are the entry lists.
  • To the gym: SMU ended Pitt’s perfect season. On the same night, FSU nearly stunned No. 4 Louisville. Lee Feinswog has been delivering his daily column, Volleyball Today, on all things indoor.
  • SANDCAST memberships are live. We’ve opened up memberships for anyone who wants to watch full podcast episodes on YouTube a day or two early.
  • Coming up on Wednesday we went to the Netherlands with Leon Luini and Ruben Penninga. Well, we didn’t actually go to the Netherlands, they came here for the Hermosa Open (AWESOME NEWS regarding that, by the way. Dangling that carrot for future news). Tri Bourne and Kyle Friend sat down with the boys while I was in Tallahassee, and if you’re a member, you can already watch!
