Good afternoon, beach volleyball fans,
Greetings from the Capital One Lounge in Dallas where they have a yoga room — a yoga room! I’m not writing in it, obviously, but as soon as I pen this newsletter, you bet your bottom dollar I’m heading there to limber up before this 17.5-hour marathon in which I’m planning on watching the entirety of Chief of War…and still have more than half the flight left.
Thoughts, prayers, and good vibes are all viable currency to me right now. I’ll take them all.
Evidently, though, November is a big time of year for beach volleyball. This past weekend I was in Huntsville, Alabama for the annual AVCA Pairs Championships, won by Long Beach State’s excellent Melia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah. They are, even with my FSU bias, my favorite team to watch in the NCAA. If you haven’t seen them play yet, make the time to do so this spring. They’re special.
So, too, is every team who made the 48-team colossus that is World Champs, a topic that comes up on this week’s podcast with two men who will be there: Kyle Friend and Frito. And although is didn’t come up in this past week’s podcast, Brian Lewis, who sat down with Tri Bourne, was a World Champs silver medalist in his brilliant and underrated career.
