Good morning, beach volleyball fans,
And greetings from — you guessed it! — a Delta lounge.
Back in my home away from home: The T Lounge in the Atlanta airport. Fresh off a red-eye from California, where I coached *assisted* the USA Volleyball U21 men alongside Alvaro Filho. I’m headed back to Virginia Beach for a little recruiting at a p1440 National Championship, one of roughly 3890 “national championships” this summer.
You know who’s also coming home, in a roundabout way? The Crabbs. Tri Bourne had Taylor Crabb and Taylor Sander in studio for this week’s podcast, and Taylor dropped a little golden nugget bomb: He and Trevor Crabb are penciling in a return to the Beach Pro Tour…together.
We haven’t seen them on a doubles court together, in a professional setting, since 2016. This past weekend actually provided a glimpse, as they played in a NORCECA qualifier and took fourth, some of which can be attributed to Trevor barely being able to stand on two legs as he nurses a quad injury.
That news, along with Sander chatting his return from Indonesia, headline a big week upcoming in SANDCAST studios. As for the previous week:

This past week was an AWESOME one for me, as I had the opportunity to host the man I view as the father of the modern coaching movement: Rob Gray. If you’ve heard the term ecological dynamics, it is largely because of gray. Just an absolute gold mine banger of an episode:

Rick Atwood was on site at the Miami AVP League stop and dropped a fun photo gallery. I don’t believe we had any shooters on site for the quaint and intimate East Hamptons stop this past weekend. Small though it may have been, it’s actually my favorite venue I’ve seen yet this year, in that it was outside at a beautiful location and looked a little like beach volleyball.
News Around the Beach
- I think I wrote my favorite story of the year on my flight to Los Angeles. Planes are good thinking environments for me, and sometimes, stories flow. After reading Wright Thompson’s Pappyland, I wrote a reflection on fatherhood, sports, and stories that matter.
- Stare Jablonki Challenge up next. After a week off of meaningful international play, the Beach Pro Tour is back at one of the most popular stops of the year. Only two American men, Chase Budinger and Miles Evans, and Hagen Smith and Logan Webber, are in the qualifier. Making main draw is imperative for both. The women, meanwhile, have five pairs — five!! — straight into the main draw: Kim Hildreth and Teegan Van Gunst, Julia Donlin and Lexy Denaburg, Savvy Simo and Abby Van Winkle, Molly Phillips and Hailey Harward, and Corinne Quiggle and Megan Rice. Woulda been six, too, but Deahna Kraft and Xolani Hodel pulled out. Maddie Anderson and Brook Bauer headline the qualifier crew, followed by Carly Kan and Devanne Sours.
